Local, State, and federal Resources

There are numerous organizations in Muncie, greater Indiana, and across the country that help support and advocate for LGBTQ people.

This section organizes local and state resources into sections for ease of use. Please also make sure to check out our specialized sections on legal, medical, and educational help.

Local Crisis Centers

  • A Better Way provides shelter and services for victims of domestic violence, transitional housing, advocacy for victims of sexual assault, a 24-hour crisis line for persons in any type of crisis, AOK afterschool programs, a suicide hotline, bullying, teen dating violence and domestic violence prevention programs, and a check-in call service for elderly or disabled homebound persons.

  • www.imaTYFA.org – Indiana Trans Youth Family Allies

  • Trans Youth Family Allies (TYFA) is an international resource with local roots in Indianapolis. TYFA “empowers children and families by partnering with educators, service providers and communities, to develop supportive environments in which gender may be expressed and respected.” TYFA is a wonderful resource for parentseducators, and healthcare practitioners looking for support and information. Indiana Transgender/Gender Variant Resources:

This section lists organizations that work to advocate and support LGBTQ people and in some cases, provide education at the national level.

  • Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network – GLSEN advocates for equal treatment of students on basis of sexual orientation and gender and an end to bullying in American schools

  • Colage – National organization for support of children of LGBTQ parents

  • Human Rights Campaign – Prominent national anti-hate organization founded in 1980

  • National Center For Lesbian Rights  – NCLR has been advocating for all LGBTQ rights (including non-lesbians) since 1977

  • Trevor Space – a safe internet chat room for LGBTQ youth that is monitored by adults

  • GSA Network – GSA advocates for safe schools and communities for gender and racial minorities.

  • Family Equality Council  – The Family Equality Council’s mission is to advance legal and lived equality for LGBTQ families, and for those who wish to form them, through building community, changing hearts and minds, and driving policy change.

  • Child Welfare League of America – In their work, they address LGBTQ  youth issues and provide information for Professionals

  • LAMBDA Legal Toolkit – Tools to support LGBTQ youth in care.

  •  PFLAG – Works to support and educate parents, family, and friends of lesbians and gays.
