About Us
Our Mission
Muncie OUTreach’s mission is to provide an accepting environment to enhance the personal growth of gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth in the Delaware County area. We provide programming for LGBTQ youth, as well as advocate for community awareness and acceptance of young people of all sexual orientations and gender identities.
How Did We Start?
Laura and Jeff’s journey is a powerful example of what can be achieved through community and unwavering dedication. When their son Matt came out at the age of twelve, Laura quickly realized how few resources existed for LGBTQ youth in their local area. Determined to provide him with a sense of belonging, she made weekly trips to the Indiana Youth Group in Indianapolis, a place where Matt could find acceptance and safety. But as she witnessed the struggles of other LGBTQ teens in Delaware County, many of whom lacked the same support, Laura knew she had to do something.
Driven by this need, Laura connected with the Unitarian Universalist Church of Muncie and discovered the OUTreach program in Ogden, Utah. The program's administrators generously shared their model with her, giving Laura the tools she needed to create a similar initiative in her own community. With hard work and determination, OUTreach found a home at the Muncie YWCA, offering LGBTQ youth a safe space to gather, connect, and be themselves.
Over the years, Laura has evolved from an organizer into a beloved "mother" to many of the teens she serves, providing not only guidance and support but also a shoulder to lean on. From late-night phone calls and hospital visits to emergency shelter and a warm meal, Laura has become a constant source of love and care. Her efforts have transformed OUTreach into more than just a support group—it’s become a true community where young people feel valued, safe, and, most importantly, loved.
